New domain name endings set to shake up the net

Domain Name Registration

The net will get a lot bigger in 2013. That's when the net's familiar domains will be joined by a slew of novel names.
The change will mean lots of new words will appear to the right of the dot where people usually expect to see .com, or .net.
Run by Icann, which oversees the net's addressing system, the scheme gives organisations that can afford the $185,000 registration fee the chance to run their own domain.
No longer will they have to search to see if a .com is available. Instead, big companies such as Microsoft, Coca Cola or Nike could run a domain based on their company name.
New territory
More than 1,900 domain name applications have been received. As well as business names, applications are in for city-based domains such as .NYC and .Berlin, industry sectors such as .cars and even web slang like .lol.
There are known to be some duplicates in the list. For instance, there are at least two applications for .africa and for .eco. However, if only 10% of the total go live next year the number of domains on the net will more than double.
"It's the biggest shake up of the domain name space ever," said Lesley Cowley, chief executive of Nominet which oversees the UK's net addresses. Nominet has applied to run the .wales/.cymru domain.
It is not the first time that new domains have been added to the net. That has been done twice before in 2000 and 2004, said Ms Cowley.
"However," she said, "not all of those domains have been a resounding success."
Icann may have approved the .museum and .coop domains but few were using those suffixes, she said. Others such as .biz and .info had prospered.
"What's different this time round is that instead of having one new extension every few years we will have hundreds coming out in one year," said domain investor and blogger Michael Berkens.
Group identity
The attraction of gaining control of an entire domain had boosted interest, said Mr Berkens, with lots of groups submitting applications. The potential returns meant some of the bigger groups bidding for domains had won serious backing.
A start-up called Donuts Inc claims to have raised about $100m (£65m) to pay the registration fees for the 307 domains it has applied to run and to create the computer infrastructure to run those domains.
Sizeable investments have also been won by others such as Directi and Minds and Machines to fund their applications.
"However," he said, "not all of them are great ideas, not all of them will succeed."
Mr Berkens said some registrars of current domains had started to take reservations for names that could be popular when the new domains go live. Even though, he said, there were no guarantees that anyone applying to reserve a domain name, such as cats.lol, would get it.
"It will take quite a bit of education and marketing to make the behavioural change," he added. "People will need help with that learning curve."
What that means, he said, was that .com would remain the domain of choice for some time to come.
Ms Cowley from Nominet said that large businesses, like Microsoft, would be able to see the benefit of applying for and running their own domains, the picture was much less clear for smaller firms.
"If you have an established business, are happy with your name and your customers and prospective customers know where to find you, then I would not see a business case for moving," she said.

.xxx domain names are coming

Way4domain

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), recently announced that the domain name “.xxx” will soon be available for registration. This means the public (e.g. the adult entertainment industry) could register your company name under .xxx.

If you or your organization owns a registered trademark
(issued by a recognized government body, such as the Canadian Trademarks Office), you may submit an application during the “Sunrise” period to block the adult entertainment industry from reserving your mark. This “Sunrise” period runs from September 7 to October 28, 2011. There is a one-time Off Fee for this service.

If you don't have a registered trademark, then you may secure your own “.xxx”domain name in order to pre-empt others from getting it. The ".xxx" registration period begins on December 6, 2011. As with all other top-level-domains, such as .com or .ca, a “.xxx” domain must be renewed annually.

If you or your organization does not wish to see your trademark or your trade name being associated with “.xxx”, we recommend you take one or more of the following actions:
  1. If you own a trademark registration, apply to have your trademark opted-out of the “.xxx” scheme before the "Sunrise" period ends on October 28, 2011.
  2. If you don’t have a trademark registration, secure your own “.xxx” so as to prevent others from taking it. Once you’ve registered your “.xxx” domain name, you don’t need to use it but you may just “park” it in your records.
  3. If your trademark is not registered, you should consider registering it now. It is always more beneficial and less costly to contest a domain name registered by others if your mark or name is registered as a trademark.

If you have any questions, or if you require assistance in registering your trademark or .xxx domain name, please feel free to contact us at ip@nelligan.ca, or using our coordinates listed above.

Microsoft Tablets Surface, but Will They Float?

Way4domain

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) on Monday announced two Windows tablets in its new Surface line -- one running Windows 8 RT, and one running Windows 8 Professiona
The Win 8 RT version will run on an ARM (Nasdaq: ARMHY) processor, and the Windows 8 Pro version will have a third-generation Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) Core processor.
The casing of Microsoft's Surface tablets is made from VaporMg, pronounced "Vapor-Mag," based on magnesium. The Surface tablets have a 3mm pressure-sensitive Touch Cover that senses keystrokes as gestures. This lets users type faster than they would with an on-screen keyboard.
The Surface tablets' screens have a 16:9 aspect ratio, the current industry standard for high-definition screens.
Surface with Windows RT will weigh 676 grams. It will feature a 10.6-inch ClearType HD screen; a microSD slot, a USB 2.0 port, a Micro HD video slot and a 2x2 MIMO antenna. It comes with Office 15 apps.
Surface for Windows 8 Pro will weigh 903 grams. It features a 10.6-inch ClearType full HD display, a microSDXC slot, a USB 3.0 port, a Mini DisplayPort Video slot, and a 2x2 MIMO antenna.
Microsoft did not offer pricing information.

Microsoft aims to straddle two worlds with new Surface tablet

Several years behind its Silicon Valley rivals, Microsoft is betting it can play catch-up on tablets and smartphones by leveraging its dominance in the workplace and its success in the living room.
Just imagine Microsoft offering its Office software exclusively on the Surface while providing access to Xbox games and videos. It could be the right mix of professional and personal elements — a combination that Apple and Google haven’t been able to achieve fully. Then add the other online assets Microsoft has amassed over the years: the videoconferencing service Skype, the professional social network Yammer and the search engine Bing.
The potential is great, analysts say. That is, if the notoriously bureaucratic tech giant doesn’t end up repeating its past mistakes.
“Microsoft has had all the pieces for a consumer strategy for years, and they’ve totally and utterly failed time and time again,” said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Gartner research. Standout failures include Microsoft’s Zune music player and the Kin smartphone, which were panned by critics and fed the reputation of a company that was out of touch with consumers.
“The trick is if they can tie it all together into a compelling story and get consumers to buy into a whole ecosystem of devices and apps, which is what Apple has done so well and Google has done well, too,” Gartenberg said.
On Tuesday, Microsoft’s stock shot up by nearly 3 percent, though the shares are about half the value of their high reached in December 1999.
When it comes to tablets, Microsoft hopes office workers will want the Surface’s keyboard and stylus to produce Excel spreadsheets or PowerPoint presentations and then take the gadget home to watch movies. Microsoft on Wednesday is expected to roll out at least one new Windows 8 smartphone that will add to its mobile ecosystem.
